Libya Completes Third Phase of Municipal Elections
According to UNSMIL, “The process was conducted in a generally calm and orderly atmosphere,” with voter participation estimated at 69%, citing the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) in a statement posted on US social media company X.
The UN mission commended the contributions of local authorities, security forces, and election observers for facilitating a secure and smooth voting experience.
Emphasizing the significance of electoral integrity, UNSMIL noted “the importance of respecting the integrity of the electoral process and using established legal mechanisms to address any potential electoral disputes,” while reaffirming its support for Libyan-led initiatives to promote “inclusive, credible, and transparent electoral processes.”
On Saturday, residents of Tobruk, Qaminis, Sebha, Tokra, Al-Abyar, Suloug, Benghazi, Sirte, and Qasr Al-Jadi cast their votes as part of this third stage of municipal elections.
Libya had previously completed the first phase of municipal polls on Nov. 16, 2024, covering 58 out of 143 municipalities nationwide, with the second phase beginning on Aug. 16.
The electoral commission reported that a total of 922 candidates, including 284 women, competed for 87 council seats across the nine municipalities involved in this third phase.
